UNKNOWN ANTIQUE DOLL DESCRIBED AS FRENCH BUT MAY HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THE FRENCH MARKET – MARKED DEP – 21″
$395.00
When this doll was originally purchased in the UK she was described as being French. I cannot be certain of this but she is marked DEP which means she was made for the French market. There are also some numbers on the top of her head that are extremely hard to read but under a bright light look like 28-5.
Regardless of where she was made or who her maker was this is a superb, quality antique doll and would date to around the 1890’s era. She measures in length approximately 21″.
She has a flawless bisque shoulder plate head and stunning blue glass eyes that open and close and she retains most of her original eyelid wax. Her eyebrows are multi stroked and she has delicately stroked upper and lower eyelashes and the usual red accent dot in the corner of each eye and her nostrils. She has an open mouth with a row of teeth and her cheek blushing is nice and bright. She retains her original blonde mohair wig and has a cork pate also underneath.
Her body is mostly cloth with just the gussetted knee area made from leather and definitely original to her. Her strung arms are a little loose and you can see a wooden bead so I would say these have been re-done at some stage and perhaps also re-covered but difficult to tell. Her fine bisque half arms are in beautiful condition. The bottom of her legs kick out to the side a little and there are some age marks on her body.
She comes wearing antique clothing that consists of a fine cotton frock trimmed with lace, a fine cotton half petticoat and matching pantaloons. She also has antique shoes in worn condition.
This is a fabulous doll and one not seen often.
